Tires and Safety

Starcraft Galaxy 6 can carry a small boat strapped to the top.

It's very important to insert here a word about tent trailer tires. The wheels on virtually all of these are much smaller than the wheels on the towing vehicle and of these so are the tires. Therefore it is absolutely vital to maintain the exact recommended tire pressure (which may be as high as 65 pounds) at all times. That becomes more important the heavier the trailer is loaded, otherwise a blowout is certain. Never travel without at least one spare, and if the trip is long or on unpaved roads, carry two spares.

Storage when not in use is far less a problem than with bulkier rec units, although poor storage facilities will naturally reduce the trailer's life. The main thing is to provide a dry place, and most home garages meet the requirement. Never store a trailer away for the winter without completely drying the canvas. There is no harm in traveling from one campsite to another with wet canvas, but prolonged dampness without sunlight and vegetation will only destroy the fabric. Even treated duck may mildew quickly.

Care also should be taken that fabric is not pinched between framing or struts as it is folded in place. Lubricate all zippers with wax. And never (on these or any other vehicles) store toilets or toilet tanks very long without emptying and cleaning them. Hitches and electrical hookups should be coated lightly with oil or vaseline to prevent rusting or corrosion.

If proper pressure is maintained in the tires, it is not necessary to block up the camper. But many owners prefer to do so anyway. If the unit must be stored outdoors, tilt it toward the tongue so that water will run off rather than accumulate on top.
